PORTALBERITA.CO.ID - Eighteen-year-old independent candidate Gabriel Raimondo has successfully secured a seat in the Jersey parliament, known as the States Assembly, making him one of the world's youngest elected politicians, as reported by The Guardian.
Raimondo made the decision to temporarily pause his A-level examinations in biology, chemistry, and mathematics to focus on campaigning in the parish of St Brelade, where he triumphed over a candidate from the Reform Jersey party.
This victory comes amidst a challenging election cycle for the Reform Jersey party, which experienced disappointing overall results across the island jurisdiction.
Following his electoral success on June 9, 2026, Raimondo unexpectedly received congratulatory remarks from United States President Donald Trump after the American leader was questioned about the achievement by ITV.
"It makes me proud of my island... It’s really good to see Jersey being put on the map," said Gabriel Raimondo, a member of the Jersey States Assembly, regarding the international recognition his win garnered.
When pressed for his opinion on President Trump, Raimondo maintained a diplomatic stance while simultaneously offering a clear critique of the intense partisan division characterizing American governance structures.
"I would have to say not at the moment," said Gabriel Raimondo, a member of the Jersey States Assembly, when asked directly about his current view of Trump.
Raimondo clarified his preference for Jersey's local political environment, which values consensus, over the rigid, two-party conflict often observed in overseas systems like the United States.
"Here you’ve got to work with each other. There has to be some sort of collaboration," said Gabriel Raimondo, a member of the Jersey States Assembly, contrasting Jersey's approach with the divisive two-party system in the US.
